Heguru Education Centre Singapore

Bringing the Heguru Method from Japan to Singapore

Kuah Eng Liang is the founder of Heguru Education Centre Singapore, who introduced the Heguru Method to Singapore in 2013.

His journey with Heguru began in 2011, when he travelled to Japan to experience Heguru Education personally, attend a Parents' Course, meet the founders of HEGL Japan, and observe Heguru classes firsthand.

Inspired by Heguru's distinctive approach to children's cognitive development and its emphasis on nurturing each child's potential, he went on to establish Heguru Education in Singapore, where the programme has since supported thousands of children and families.

Since establishing Heguru Education Singapore in 2013, Eng Liang has been actively involved in the development of the centre, programme delivery, teacher training, parent education and the introduction of Heguru's programmes to Singapore families.

"Every child has tremendous potential. Our role is to create the environment and opportunities that allow that potential to emerge."

He was subsequently awarded both:

  • EDB (Economic Development Board) Promising Local Enterprise Overseas Scholarship to the USA

He chose to pursue the EDB scholarship, earning his Bachelor of Science (Cum Laude) from Cornell University, USA, one of the prestigious Ivy League universities.

Upon returning to Singapore, he continued his academic journey and obtained a Master of Science from the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Eng Liang's academic journey has shaped his lifelong interest in learning, education and human potential.

His educational background provided him with a broad perspective on learning and development, while his subsequent experiences with children and education led him to explore how learning could be approached beyond conventional academic methods.

Passion for Teaching Sparked

Eng Liang’s passion for teaching was sparked during his stint as a relief teacher at a MOE secondary school in Singapore, while awaiting the commencement of his Master’s programme after returning from the USA.

The experience proved to be one of the most enriching and meaningful experiences of his early career. Beyond teaching, he found great fulfilment in nurturing students, building meaningful relationships with them, and witnessing their growth and development. The strong rapport he developed with his students, who fondly remembered and greatly appreciated him, further strengthened his passion for education and inspired his journey into teaching.

How can we help children develop their abilities more fully, rather than focusing only on what they can achieve academically?

This question became an important part of his educational journey and eventually led him to discover Heguru Education.

For Eng Liang, education is not simply about preparing children for examinations. It is about helping children develop confidence, curiosity, concentration, memory, thinking skills and the ability to learn independently.

What Inspired Eng Liang to
Bring Heguru to Singapore

Discovering Heguru Education in Japan

A Journey That Changed the Direction of His Life

Upon comparing his educational experiences in Singapore and overseas, Eng Liang observed that the Singapore education system was often heavily focused on academic and analytical development, with relatively less emphasis on nurturing the broader cognitive abilities of children.

When his wife became pregnant with their first child, Eng Liang began researching right-brain development and training for young children. During his research, he discovered Heguru—a programme that was not yet available in Singapore at the time.

Intrigued by Heguru’s unique approach, he travelled to Japan in 2011 to visit Heguru Japan to experience the Heguru method firsthand.

Rather than simply reading about the programme, he wanted to understand what Heguru was actually like from a parent's perspective.

During the visit, he attended a three-day Parents’ Course. During the visit, he had the opportunity to meet Heguru’s founders, Mr Hirotada Henmi and Mrs Ruiko Henmi, and was invited to observe classes at Heguru Japan.

He was deeply impressed by what he witnessed—the remarkable focus, enthusiasm and abilities of the students, as well as the distinctive teaching methods used in Heguru’s programmes. More importantly, he was touched by the passion and dedication of Mr and Mrs Henmi towards nurturing children and developing their potential.

During his visit to Japan, Eng Liang had the opportunity to meet Mr Hirotada Henmi and Mrs Ruiko Henmi, the founders of Heguru Japan.

Meeting the founders personally gave him a deeper understanding not only of the Heguru Method, but also of the philosophy and vision behind it.

He was particularly inspired by their long-standing dedication to children’s development and their belief that every child possesses tremendous potential waiting to be discovered and nurtured.

The experience strengthened his conviction that Heguru could offer Singapore families an educational approach worth exploring.

A Personal Mission to Nurture Children's Potential

"When I first encountered Heguru in Japan, I saw something very different from conventional enrichment education."

What impressed me was not simply the speed or volume of the activities. It was the way the programme sought to develop the child as a whole — including memory, concentration, visualisation, processing speed, confidence and learning ability.

I began to ask myself whether Singapore children could benefit from the same experience.

I decided that the best way to answer that question was not simply to talk about Heguru, but to make it available to families here.

That decision eventually led to the establishment of the very first Heguru Education Centre in Singapore in January 2013.

Launching Heguru Singapore
in 2013

In January 2013, Eng Liang founded and launched the first Heguru Education Centre in Singapore, introducing the Heguru Method brain-training programmes to Singapore families for the very first time.

The vision was simple:

To make Heguru's distinctive approach to children's development accessible to families in Singapore.

Since then, Heguru Education Singapore has grown from its beginnings into a network serving families across Singapore.

The centre continues to provide Heguru programmes for children from infancy through the primary-school years, incorporating activities designed to develop memory, concentration, numeracy, literacy, visualisation, processing speed, problem-solving and other cognitive abilities.

More importantly, the focus remains on helping children discover their own potential and develop confidence in learning.

He is also a certified Heguru Japan instructor for Levels 1, 2 and 3, reflecting his extensive training and continued professional development with HEGL Japan.

Over the years, he has made numerous and constant visits to Heguru Japan to participate in training, support and accompany Heguru Education Centre's teachers during their training and certification programmes, and maintain close professional ties with the Heguru headquarters.

This ongoing engagement helps ensure that our teachers remain closely aligned with the teaching standards, methods and philosophy of Heguru Education in Japan.

A Personal Connection to Heguru

Why Heguru Is Personal to Our Founder

Heguru is more than a programme that Eng Liang introduced to Singapore.

It has also been part of his own family's educational journey.

His two children attended Heguru lessons from a young age and were subsequently selected for Singapore's Ministry of Education Gifted Education Programme (GEP).

The experience gave Eng Liang a personal perspective on the importance of nurturing children's abilities from an early age.

While every child's educational journey is unique, this experience reinforced his belief that children should be given opportunities to develop their abilities broadly — not only through conventional academic learning, but also through activities that nurture memory, concentration, thinking, visualisation and confidence.

Eng Liang's Educational Philosophy

Every Child Has Potential

Eng Liang believes that children develop at different rates, learn in different ways and demonstrate their abilities in different forms.

For Eng Liang, the purpose of enrichment is not simply to give children more work. It is to help children become more capable learners.

Heguru aims to create an environment where children can experience learning positively while developing skills that may support them throughout their education and beyond.
